Mobility Caucus

Purpose

To create a heightened awareness within all levels of the UUA, in individual congregations, and in local communities of the civil rights of people with mobility disabilities.

Strategy

To educate people with and without mobility disabilities in our congregations and throughout the UUA, as well as those in our communities, to empower all of us to advocate (be anti-ableists) for the civil rights for those with mobility disabilities.

Goals

To create an environment of inclusion for persons with mobility disabilities.

To fight institutional oppression and ableism. Ableism is defined as the beliefs, policies, and attitudes of people, institutions, and society that discriminate against people with disabilities. (c.f., sexism, racism, homophobia)

To advocate for ourselves and others by focusing on institutional ableism and its resulting impact on attitudes, access, and accommodations rather than on an individual's physical limitations.

Initial Tasks

  • To create a pamphlet on 'disability etiquette', i.e. recommended strategies for those without mobility disabilities on interacting with those with mobility disabilities.
  • To create a pamphlet on identifying and combating ableism.
  • To create a proto-type curriculum for Children's and Youth Religious Education Directors on teaching and working with children with mobility disabilities.
  • To create a proto-type curriculum for Children's and Youth Religious Education Directors on helping children with and without mobility disabilities interact with and learn from each other.
